keys to the candy store

tomorrow i start summer band lessons. i will be teaching 6th-12th grade students- even though during the school year i teach 5th and 9th-12th grade students. i'm excited. tomorrow i will meet (hopefully) most of my high school students.

to prepare for the blessed event called "summer band" i decided to practice my flute (it has been a long time) and piano. then, i decided to get out a snare and play a few rudiments. then, i decided to get out one of the marimbas and play scales/exercises/random patterns. and then i realized that one of the biggest perks of being a band teacher is that you get to play with all of the percussion instruments as much as you want. oh yes. perhaps tomorrow i will tackle the chimes, bells, and vibes. i'm like a kid in a candy store.... only, i have keys to the store and can go there anytime i want.

i decided to decorate the board in front of my room to welcome my students. is this too juvenile? i don't care. i like using the markers.

teaching is really weird. i think teaching high school will be difficult because i am young. its like tomorrow i have the opportunity to show my students my teacher mask. only, i'm not sure what mask i should wear.

so, tonight is my last free night until may. i thought i would celebrate by making a super awesome meal in the slow cooker. i'm going to pair this with a few drinks, a movie, and possibly an early bedtime.

No kidding about the percussion!!! I don't think I've ever played with percussion instruments without feeling a little paranoid. That's worth the tuition bills, I should think. good luck today, you grownup you. I am calling you tonight whether you like it or not.

Awwww! You're so grown up! Kinda makes me wish I'd stuck with the teacher thing so we could swap teacher stories, but alas, I have no dedication to anything. Oh well. GOOD LUCK with the teaching, though I'm fairly certain you don't need luck, because you're amazing. :) --Kate from college
