i can tell it is august. for some strange reason i still have nwc's website as my home page. i can't bring myself to change it. i like seeing the daily posts on the informer. i like to see the caf menu and chapel schedule. perhaps it is comforting to know that the home i had for four years is still going strong. that people are still thinking, discussing world issues and class material, staying up all night to study for music history exams with their friends, questioning so deeply, standing up for what's right, creating, loving, and pursuing their dreams. all of these things are still happening- even though i'm gone. that's good. i'm off to have new experiences. i'm meeting tons of new people (although, i don't know everyone's names yet!) and i'm pursuing my dream. four years ago i wasn't sure if i could do this. now, i have the tools and the knowledge and the opportunity. now, i just have to go out and get it done. and i am.
band camp is half over. most new teachers freak out on the first day of school, but i will have had 3 weeks of lessons and 4 days of band camp before the first bell rings on the first day. will i be nervous that day? no. no reason to. i'll make mistakes but it will be fine. no one is perfect. i have to tell myself that everyday.
i can see the students that are passionate about band. one in particular arrived to camp 45 minutes early (he got there before i did!) he played and practiced and talked to me for about 30 minutes. i was just like that- perhaps less forward (i was shy). i value his attitude. i gave him a leadership position and he really did well. perhaps he will want to be a teacher in the future.
lately i've been watching the Olympics (okay, i've watched everyday since they started). i turn it on whenever i'm awake and at home. i like watching the different countries compete and learn the different stories behind the athletes. i think China would be amazing to see in person. what a interesting place with an amazing history. anyway, i think one of my favorite sports to watch during the Olympics is the rowing because of the bicyclists in the background. i always think that someday they are all going to fall on one another because they are going so fast and not watching the road. i also like to watch the swimming and basketball. some of the sports i have never seen before. i tried to explain them to my cousin who is going to be a P.E. teacher. he didn't even know some of them!
i've been talking to Ben, my cousin, everyday. today he told me that he wants me to send him a box of Old Dutch Pickle chips. oh yes, they are his favorite. he can't get them in Montana and he ate all of the bags that he brought home with him from Minnesota. i kid around with him and say that i'm going to come and visit him some weekend (its about 23 hours to his place). perhaps a trip during summer break should be in the plans.
